Councillor Hubley Questions Temporary Closure of the Kanata Leisure Centre and Wave Pool

Press Release

Wednesday March 6, 2013

Kanata, ON – Councillor Allan Hubley is working hard to ensure that taxpayers will be reimbursed for time lost on their membership at City recreational facilities undergoing maintenance.

The Kanata Leisure Centre and Wave Pool is currently scheduled to be closed from March 18-April 14, 2013 after being closed December 10-22, 2013.

“It is fundamentally unfair for taxpayers to be on the hook for membership fees while the KLC or any city facility is closed for maintenance,” said Councillor Hubley

As a result of Councillor Hubley’s inquiry into the matter yesterday, and thanks to the quick action by Parks and Recreation GM Dan Chenier, Ottawa City staff have been updated on the policy.  Residents will now be able to apply to recoup any time lost due to closures by having it added to the end of their membership if they do not want to use their membership at another facility.

Councillor Hubley is pleased with the result, and thanks City staff for quickly reviewing the policy to ensure it is fair. Hubley said, “If a taxpayer pays for a one year membership they should get 12 full months worth of access to the facility.”

To obtain an extension, please fill out a Membership Extension Application at the Customer Service Counter of any City of Ottawa recreation facility.
