Kanata South Councillor Allan Hubley accepts $20,000 from Waste Management Inc. for Young’s Pond Park Environmental Rescue

Kanata – Young’s Pond Park is one step closer to being revitalized thanks to a significant donation by Waste Management Inc. (WM).

On Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2011, Kanata South Councillor Allan Hubley was honoured to accept $20,000 from WM on behalf of the residents of Katimatvik-Hazeldean and Kanata South. Funds from the tournament will go to the site beautification of Young’s Pond Park in Katimativik-Hazeldean.

For the first time in its history, WM held its annual Charity Golf Tournament in Canada at the Marshes Golf Club and Brookstreet Hotel in Kanata on Aug. 2 and 3. More than 150 executives representing various vendors and other corporations throughout North America participated in the tournament.

WM raised $375,000 from the tournament and it donated the funds to 19 charities including 16 local charities.

“I am very pleased that Waste Management is partnering with the community to improve Young’s Pond Park,” said Hubley.  “I would like to thank Waste Management for being an excellent corporate citizen.”

Ross Wallace, West Carleton Environmental Centre Site Manager said “Waste Management is very pleased to be able share the donations made by our generous suppliers with worthy organizations in the communities in which we operate.”

 BACKGROUND ON YOUNG’S POND PARK

The medium-sized manmade pond was built in the 1980s with a clay liner; also in the park is a play structure, benches, walking trails and a large sand box. The pond is accessible via Young Road, Shaw Court and McCurdy Drive. Plans for the revitalization are in the preliminary stages and include: a boardwalk, benches, picnic tables, knowledge board, new park sign and more.
