Friday, January 20, 2012

Kanata – On Thursday, January 19, Kanata South Councillor Allan Hubley was successful in bringing together members of the Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) and City Staff to showcase the accomplishments the City has achieved to reduce the risk of flooding in the west-end and in particular his ward of Kanata South.

Councillor Hubley would like to thank Robert Tremblay Director of Research and Marc Lefebvre, Underwriting Coordinator at IBC for all of their efforts in helping to arrange the attendance of key representatives from the insurance industry for these discussions. As well, the Councillor would like to thank IBC for their hard work in the months leading up to this vital meeting.

Councillor Hubley would also like to thank City of Ottawa’s Dixon Weir, Alain Gonthier and Eric Tousignant and their staff for all of their efforts that led us to where we are today. Councillor Hubley is also thankful to staff for their ongoing efforts to reduce the risk of flooding in Kanata South and across the City of Ottawa.

“I am very pleased to report that we accomplished my objective of  giving the insurance companies a very detailed presentation on the extensive efforts that the City is making as part of the $32 million investment in water and sewer infrastructure in the west-end, which includes my ward,” said Hubley. “Armed with this information we now hope that the insurance companies can more accurately assess the risk of flooding in my ward and recognize the comprehensive plans to protect our residents and their policy holders.”

In 2011, Mayor Jim Watson announced that City Council approved $32 million for the West-End Flooding Investigation Action Plan for extensive upgrades to existing water and sewer infrastructure. A number of the projects were completed last year and many more are slated for completion this year.
