Ottawa Police Services Alert about Aggressive Solicitation



Aggressive Solicitation/False Claims – Concerns:

Issue: recent complaints in Stittsville and Kanata area: a water filtration company is making claims that they are required to enter the home to test water and that the city tap water is hazardous and unhealthy. As with any purchase, do your own research and investigate options prior to making a decision.

Do not feel pressured to answer questions or to allow a stranger into your residence and feel free to terminate the conversation when you no longer wish to engage with them.  If you ask them to leave your property and they do not, please call Police at 613-230-6211.  Please contact the company if you feel the behaviour of the representative is inappropriate.

What you can do – General Safety Tips:

–       Lock doors, use door viewers when possible.

–       Do not feel compelled to open your door to sales persons

–       Request identification and write down the information provided.

–       Ask the salesperson to leave pamphlet etc. and you can get back to them at your convenience.

–       If you are not interested, advise the salesperson and then firmly advise them to leave your property

–       Have adequate exterior lighting

–       Avoid leaving items of value (purses, laptops etc.) in plain view of doors and   windows. Shut blinds and curtains.

–       Report suspicious activity

–       Improve home security with deadbolts etc.
