Recent Power Outages – Kanata South

Letter received from Hydro Ottawa – November 14, 2012

On behalf of Hydro Ottawa, I apologize for any inconvenience caused by the power outages in Kanata this week.  As you are aware, Hydro Ottawa is committed to providing reliable service to all our customers.  In Kanata, we look forward to mitigating the impact of power outages with the completion of the Terry Fox Transformer Station in 2013 and the continuation of our distribution capital program.

For your information, I would like to update you on the three power outages that occurred this week and the steps that Hydro Ottawa is taking to rectify the situation.

On Monday, November 12th at 8:29 a.m. a power outage affected 9,000 customers with complete restoration achieved at 12:37 p.m.  The cause of the outage was switchgear equipment failure which now has been repaired.  Some of these customers will have experienced multiple outages in this timeframe due to normal switching procedures.

On Tuesday, November 13th at 2:04 p.m. a second power outage occurred affecting 2,244 customers with complete restoration achieved at 2:12 p.m.  The cause of this outage was due to an inadvertent trip of the transformer while performing planned maintenance.

Today, on Wednesday, November 14th at 8:55 a.m. a momentary outage occurred affecting 6,000 customers and was successfully restored within seconds. After patrolling the line, no cause has been found but we will continue to investigate.

From our evaluations, these three outages were unrelated. However, we will continue to analyze and implement proactive measures to mitigate further occurrences.

As was identified in June 2012, current reliability issues in Kanata and in Bridlewood are within the normal range for the number of power outages within the Ottawa region. We will continue to invest significant resources in new infrastructure in Kanata, to stay ahead of the anticipated growth and ensure that our high standards of service reliability are maintained.

On behalf of Hydro Ottawa, I wish to extend our thanks for your continued support and patience.
