Use Caution around Aggressive Door-to-Door Salespeople

Press Release

April 4, 2013

Kanata – Councillor Allan Hubley of Kanata South warns residents in Kanata South to be vigilant with aggressive and possibly fraudulent door-to-door salespeople.  This includes looking out for your neighbours and vulnerable people in our community.

Recently, some door-to-door salespeople have been reported in the Kanata area using aggressive sales techniques and tactics including making false claims.

“I have heard from residents who are fed up with this type of behaviour” says Hubley. “I want to send a message loud and clear to any scam artist that they are not welcome in our community.”

There have also been claims of door-to-door salespeople wanting to examine the water utilities inside homes, and a separate group looking to inspect the home’s back flow valves.  These are not City employees, because City departments notify residents in writing in advance of any issues requiring entry to your residence.

One recent company asks to come in to the residence to examine where the city water enters the home so that they can see if the home qualifies for a free filtration system.  The system is provided and installed for “free” however there is a $30/month charge to use it and you are locked in to the contract for 5 yrs.

Do not feel pressured to answer questions or to allow anyone into your residence and feel free to end the conversation anytime.  If you ask them to leave your property and they do not, please call Police at 613-230-6211.

Further safety tips from the Ottawa Police Service are available on my website.
